Computer Software-Computer software, often called as software, is a set of instructions and its associated documentations that tells a computer what to do or how to perform a task. Software includes all different software programs on a computer, such as applications and the operating system.
System software- is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer’s hardware and application programs. If we think of the computer system as a layered model, the system software is the interface between the hardware and user applications.
Examples of system software:
- Utility software.
- System servers.
- Device drivers.
- Operating system (OS)
- Windows/graphical user interface (GUI) systems.
Application software- (app for short) is computer software designed to perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities for the benefit of the user.
Examples of application software:
- Microsoft suite of products (Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Internet browsers like Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.
- mobile pieces of software such as Pandora (for music appreciation), Skype (for real-time online communication), and Slack (for team collaboration)
